Maryland Governor Wes Moore made a special visit to Ruby’s Southern Comfort Kitchen yesterday, as a part of his efforts to support local restaurants during Maryland Restaurant Week. Governor Moore, known for his strong support of local businesses, spent the morning engaging in impactful conversation with the owners of Ruby’s, Jason and Candi Dailey, their culinary team, and other restaurateurs discussing the important role Maryland's restaurant industry has in driving the local economy and preserving community culture.
During his visit, Governor Moore went on a tour of Ruby’s, and enjoyed some signature Southern dishes, including their renowned fried chicken and mac and cheese. This visit was also the hub of a very necessary conversation—facilitated by Governor Moore and Alexander Austin, President & CEO, Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce and featuring:
Candi Dailey, Co-founder, Ruby’s Southern Comfort Kitchen
Secretary Maria Martinez,Governor’s Office of Small, Minority, and Women Business Affairs
Garrick Lumsden, Managing Owner, Pennyroyal Station
Dr. Michelle Grant, Founder, Era Wine Bar
Tashae Jones, Co-Owner, Spiced Black
Ameer Jones, Co-Owner, Spiced Black
Edwin Lottie, Founder and CEO, Dodah’s Kitchen
“Our minority-owned businesses are essential to the economic health of our state — and that’s why we are creating opportunities and developing relationships with our small and minority-owned business owners to help put them on the path to success,” said Gov. Moore. “I want to thank the Prince George’s County business owners of Ruby’s Southern Comfort Kitchen, Pennyroyal Station, Spiced Black, Era Wine Bar, and Dodah’s Kitchen for sitting down for this invaluable conversation, as our administration is committed to building more pathways to work, wages and wealth for all Marylanders.”
The conversation delved into the motivations behind starting a business in Prince George's County, the significance of minority-owned restaurants in their communities, the unique challenges they face, and opportunities for collaboration between the restaurant industry and government initiatives.
"Ruby’s is more than a restaurant—it's a reflection of my grandmother’s legacy, built on family recipes that have been passed down through generations. We’re honored that Governor Moore chose Ruby’s to facilitate a conversation that helps the restaurateurs of Maryland’s vibrant culinary scene feel supported," said Candi Dailey. Chef Jerome Grant, Executive Chef at Potomac Hospitality Group, added, "For us, it’s about telling a story through every dish we serve. To have someone as supportive of local culture as Governor Moore join us is truly special."
